Seems by yalls answers they in all and only tied to cities now. I've found a trader in every biome so far, there's one linked to each city I believe. I have Rekt in the forest, Bob in the Desert, two Jens in the Snow and a Jen in the Wasteland. As far as I know, there should be a trader somewhere on the outskirts at every city.

As for removing all the traders I think you would have to turn on loot respawn. Maybe set it to a very high day count just to make sure you aren't just looting the same buildings over and over. Without loot respawn you would eventually loot all the items and be stuck relying on zombie drops and the drops from the sky.
