These leases were eventually converted into a timeframe of 20 years in 1952. In 1972, the leases were renewed, and in 1992, they were denied. People started to pack up their belongings and left what’s now known as the Elkmont ghost town. The National Park Service was going to tear down all of the buildings and let the forest regrow.
