As the engines get quieter the noise becomes more prominent. Some people do find different brand oil seems to quieten the noise some but experimentation is key for some because not all oils act the same in all engines..

Just got a 2011 Chevy HD3500 Duramax. The Silverado book says it was filled with "Dexos" but the LGH and LML Duramax Diesel supplement book says to use API CJ-4 oil. There are no stickers under the hood near the dipstick/oil fill to indicate either.

From what I understand it is the injection pump making noise, the new engines are so quiet that it is more audible but all duramaxes do it and is normal, never noticed on the LMM but very noticeable on the L5P.
