Jm stamp marlin.
Some Remington built rifles have had older JM proof stamped barrels installed for the same reason. Some barrels on Marlin built rifles have been replaced with factory replacement barrels by competent gunsmiths. Those barrels, if not proofed by the factory, will not bear the JM stamp but are perfectly fine rifles.
Codes don't work. I got an email from a guy who said the MR is Marlin Remington/and the 2 most likely signifies the year and the 2nd number most likely signifies the month...or vice versa...of manufacture. I got the rifle in Sept. 2012 so the 2 probably means 2012. This brings me to what a "JM" Marlin is. JM Marlins are those Marlin rifles produced prior to the sale of Marlin and move to Remington's Ilion NY plant. Marlin used to stamp their rifle barrels with the initials of company founder, John Marlin, hence the JM. After the sale and move to Remington this was no longer done.

If the gun was pre-remlin then wouldn't it have the JM stamp. With Marlin's reputation I would be shocked to find one that left the factory without the stamp of approval.
