The key was because I didn't like how frizzy it looked after washing, I'd unravel the twist BUT i wouldn't comb out the twists. Eventually the individual strands loc'd up. So long story short, after each wash, unravel the twists but do not comb out the strands. Separate them from each other then retwist. They'll eventually loc. Hope this helps!
