Obviously, timing chains don't actually "stretch" but increase in length due to wear in the links and connecting pins. A 1/2 inch increase in length needs context. This amount in a relatively long used chain on a 100,000 mile engine may (I can't stress MAY enough) not be terrible. The same amount in a shorter chain might be a disaster.
