It feels thick in your hands. The 870 (or even a 500) felt way more responsive to me. If you just want an entry level beginner pump shotgun - go with the 870. I own it in 12 and 20 and I own a Benelli SBE 2 (which is great) but as a beginner gun, the 870 will last decades, you can beat it up, and it shoots straight.When the Nova came out I bought one and sold my 835. I personally prefer the Nova for a few reasons. First, its lighter. Second, I feel it has a better action, and for me it is easier to cycle. My 835 was one of the models that had trouble with the extractor not grabbing the shell when you cycle the action.

There's a reason it's only $169. Pick up and handle the Maverick, and then the Nova, and your mind will be made up quickly. I also have the Remington 870 (most likely the one you also describe). I think you'll find most folks on here are either 870 or Nova fans much like Chevy/Ford folk. Either one will work just fine.
