Yeah that's how it plays out if you want all the rewards. You can do everything but rykard and be fine, explore the dungeon and such, just don't do the actual fight. It's a gimmick fight anyways with a special weapon for it so your level doesn't really matter. Or you can try and fight it without the gimmick for a hard mode.
