Observing the two wads they are the same overall height and shotcup and cushion heights are also the same. The cushion design is the typical Remington power piston.Loads calling for petals removed. I want to load #4 buck in a 20 g using a load calling for a SP20 with petals removed.Now do I cut down to the end of the slit in the wad or all the way to base of wad? Leave the shot cup, cut to the end of the slits. Such that the equator of the shot is above the remaining petals.The 20 gauge Remington hulls that used Rem 57 primers need an RP-20 wad. Harder to find than a RXP20 wad. There were 12 gauge pre-All-American hulls (mostly fiber based, a few with a white plastic "base") that used those primers. Especially when there's plenty of small producers selling a wad that will suit the needs of hunters, such as Gualandi. The SG20 Mid should get you in at less than 1.5" and if you have a really bulky powder, there are several wads in the 1.3xx" range from other producers. Target shooters don't like 1 oz in a 20 gauge.

However, as for sp20's being the only wad for 1 oz field loads, that is inaccurate. According to my 5th Ed Lyman, there are 1 oz lead recipes for wads waa20, sp20, rxp20, and 20s1. Running low on wads and as much as I like the RXP20's I think it's time to move on. They are hard to find and Remington seems to be awfully proud of their product. Unique is a very good powder for the 16 ga. reloader. I have loads W/ 15 gr. to 19 gr. using 7/8 oz to 1 1/8 oz of shot. PB is also a good powder for low pressure, low velocity 16 ga. loading with light shot packages. I'm loading 3/4 ounce in the 16 ga RGL hulls with the gualandi 20 ga wad and remington primers - with 15.5 grains green dot.

The "s" means stitched wad, that is the wad is connected at the top of the slits. Supposed to break apart upon firing. Its main purpose is to ease feeding of the wad on some reloading machines. For reload recipe purposes, it is the same wad.
