There is a mod for that, it's called multihit limiter. It allows you to toggle what weapons, the strength and fitness you need and the weapon skill needed to activate multi hit. To be fair, short 1-handed weapons aren't that easy to multi-hit, it's actually very hard. Thrusting weapon usually have no multi-hit. Slashing weapons and short blunts have 2x. Long blades and blunts have 3x. Sledgehammer has 4x. Not sure about the baseball bat can hit 4x, at least in v41. In v40, maybe it is possible. No multi hit or at best two hits from skill. ^That's the spirit. Knowing how to adjust your position among the zombies makes possible to fight 6~8 zombies at the same time if you are using blades, spears or axes. Multi hit was fine for build 40 and below (kinda), but with the combat variety added to build 41, it is quite simply an outdated mechanic. If it was added as a level 7 weapon skill for long weapons, axes, and spears I could accept this, but this is actually a very difficult skill to use in a combat situation.
