First, this does not apply to the 260 trans, only 265s. Like Tom says, there are 2 changes. First, there is a drive gear on the trans output shaft that is replaced by a spacer bushing on the M3 trans. Second, there is a hole in the trans rear case part that has a sheet metal plug, kind of like a freeze plug in a block, that has to be pried out.The questions I have is what drive shaft, guibo, and center bearing to use. Any 1986 or later Getrag 260 will work. Earlier ones don't have the mounting ears for the aluminum shifter support. BMW has dust plugs for the sensor holes if you get a "e" transmission, but at $5 each most people find a substitute. 21-11-1-225-047 Blind plug for "e" sensor holes in transmission.

Conclusion: swapping out a newer Getrag 260 and replacing it with an older was is doable, but enough of a PITA that given the choice I would happily pay more for the correct used transmission, or sourced the correct shifter platform and related parts.
