I’ve wanted to review a full Schiit system for a while now, and recently settled for a nearly full Schiit system instead: the Freya+ preamplifier ($899) and the updated Bifrost 2 DAC ($699). Starting out and working my way in, the Bifrost 2 is a “True Multibit” DAC, employed in conjunction with Schiit’s custom in-house digital filter. However on its own merits, the 2/64 is a really competent DAC. Used prices for the gungnir have fallen though, so you can pick one up for a hundred or a couple hundred more than a Bifrost with tax and shipping. As much as buying used schiit sounds stellar, I completely regret buying my vidar used.The consensus is that the MM2 is pretty close to the Bifrost 2/64 for less than half the price so it makes that upgrade a lot more reasonable. The one difference is that I am listening to speakers most of the time thru a Lyr 3 and into an Aegir so the rest of my equipment was better than the Modius to start with.
